Today Cllr Jas Athwal, the Leader of the Redbridge Council, and Cllr Lloyd Duddridge announced the return of the Woodford Town Football Club to its ancestral home of Redbridge.

Cllr Athwal said “This is something we have been working on for a while now, and I am proud that myself and Cllr Duddridge’s efforts have been successful.”

Since 1993 Woodford Town have been a club in search of a home. The club, which has had players like former international players Jimmy Greaves and Jonny Haynes, have been looking to work with a supportive council to come home to Woodford. They currently play in Hertfordshire in the Essex Senior League, with no real room to grow or local community to represent.

Next season it is hoped that Woodford Town FC will be coming home to play at Ashton Playing Fields with a purpose-built football ground, so the people of Woodford can finally have their club back.

Tony Scott, Chairman of Woodford Town FC says ‘’It has always been our dream to bring the club back to Woodford. It was the only way that the club could thrive. We have a good young ambitious team that wants to entertain people in Redbridge.

I could honestly not have done this without the local Labour party. They have been with us since day one. Lloyd has been to many of our matches, and if he is as vocal in the council as ¬he has been in the stands he will be a formidable force for residents.”

Labour candidate for Bridge, Guy Williams, says “I am so proud that we were able to make this happen and bring our football club home. I want to be a part of the Labour council to work for residents, to get this result before I am even elected hopefully shows that people in Woodford can trust me to get things done.”

Labour councillor and candidate for Bridge Lloyd Duddridge says “The first game of football I ever watched was at Woodford Town. The fans of the club have been patient but hopeful that a supportive council will come along one day and give the club a leg up. To have played any part at all in making this happen makes me extremely proud. I want this to be the first of many success stories for the people of Bridge, if you trust us with your vote their will be plenty more to come.
