William Torbitt Primary School
William Torbitt Primary School

One of our local schools, William Torbitt Primary, is being forced into academisation by the Conservative government, against the wishes of many local parents and teachers. We’re supporting a locally run campaign against this forced academisation and we need your help.

As an academy, William Torbitt would become independent of the local authority and receive its funding directly from the Department for Education.  Unlike traditional state schools, academies can set their own term times and don’t have to follow the national curriculum. We don’t know what changes would be made to our school following academisation and this is deeply concerning.

William Torbitt would be a sponsored academy. Sponsors can include businesses, faith communities, universities, other schools or voluntary groups, who have majority control of the academy trust and we don’t yet know what kind of group would sponsor William Torbitt.

Although the school has had some issues, teachers and other staff there have been working hard to turn things around and improvements have been made. A huge shake up in the management of William Torbitt could set back all this progress and send the school back to square one.

Please sign the petition to send a message to the government that we don’t want William Torbitt Primary turned into an academy.
