The Leader of Redbridge Council, Cllr Jas Athwal has been elected to serve as the London Council’s executive member for crime and public protection.
London Council’s is a cross-party group representing all boroughs across the capital and it is led by an executive of 12 members, now including Cllr Jas Athwal.
Cllr Peter John OBE, chairman of London Councils, said: “Jas brings a wealth of experience to the table as Leader of Redbridge Council and I know he cares deeply about borough work to reduce youth violence and improve public perception of safety.”
Cllr Jas Athwal added, “I’m proud to have been chosen for this important role and I’m grateful to my London Council’s colleagues for their support. Crime is a huge issue right now all across London thanks to the unprecedented cuts the police have faced under this Conservative government. The Met Police alone has had to cut £850m from their budget and still has to find a further £325m savings due to these cuts – that means less officers patrolling the streets and deterring crime.
There is a lot of work to be done but I am looking forward to working with my colleagues and the Mayor of London to help make our streets safe once again.”
