This morning Redbridge Labour celebrated the launch of LGBT History Month at Redbridge Town Hall.
Speeches were given by Redbridge Rainbow, Cllr Helen Coomb, and the Leader of the Council, Cllr Jas Athwal while the rainbow flag was raised above the Town Hall.
Addressing the crowd, Cllr Athwal commented, “The history of LGBT persecution is a long and heartbreaking one which unfortunately is often overlooked and not adequately memorialised. That is why LGBT History Month is so important.”
“It is our responsibility as allies to recognise the struggle of the LGBT community and to do our part to support and advocate on their behalf.”
He added, “The persecution of any one group, whether it be because of the colour of their skin or the content of their hearts is a tragedy and it is only through acknowledging this persecution and reflecting upon it’s history that we can move forward and create a better future.”
LGBT History Month takes place every year in the month of February and will be celebrated across Redbridge with a series of events and exhibitions. For more information click here.
