The Redbridge Labour Council has announced that the new swimming pool in the west of the borough will be situated at Wanstead High School, with building work due to start in the autumn.

Redbridge Council hope to fund the pool with contributions from Sport England, with the remainder of the funding coming from internal capital and borrowing at a preferential rate. The funding will be covered in time from the admission fees generated by the pool and adjacent gymnasium, making the new pool a cost neutral venture.

Leader of the Council Jas Athwal said: “When Labour took control of the Council I always said, we are not here to oversee decline. The people of Wanstead and neighbouring wards deserve the same high quality services that we’re already delivering for the rest of the Redbridge.

“The Conservatives left our borough with a totally inadequate single pool and we are determined as a Council to put this right and deliver Results for Redbridge.”

Redbridge Labour has already delivered on this promise with the Loxford Pool opened last year; and the new Mayfield Pool opening in the coming months. Wanstead Pool is just another commitment delivered to help improve resident’s health and wellbeing.

Wanstead Councillor and Cabinet Member for Civic Pride, Cllr Sheila Bain said “This is great news for local people, who now won’t have to travel miles to have a swim.”
