Leader of the Council

Jas Athwal, is a Labour Party politician, businessman and company director; and currently Council Leader of Redbridge Council.

Cllr Athwal was educated at the local Mayfield High School in Goodmayes and London School of Economics and Political Science. He is a former accountant and computer security expert who delivered penetration testing and training worldwide for banks and military institutions and security agencies. He is now a local business man who runs his own children’s day care nursery business.

He was first elected the Council in May 2010 and elected by fellow Labour Councillors to the role of Leader of the Redbridge Labour Group in October 2011.

In the May 2014 London borough elections, Cllr Athwal led the Redbridge Labour Party to its first ever majority on the Council, gaining 11 seats giving Labour a total of 35 of the 63 seats, winning control from the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition. Increasing that total to 36 during a by-election in May 2016.

Since being elected as Leader, Cllr Athwal has radically transformed the operations of the Council and is looking at ways to better work with the community to make Redbridge the best place to live, work and visit in London.

Cllr Athwal is a fanatical football supporter who has played locally and internationally for many years and has managed various football teams locally.
